Na Sven Bouland en Roy Leicester heeft afgelopen week ook nog een derde speler uit de FC Groningen Opleiding zijn eerst profcontract getekend in Euroborg. David van der Werff heeft zich middels zijn handtekening voor twee jaar (tot medio 2026) verbonden aan de Trots van het Noorden. De 19-jarige aanvallende middenvelder speelt in FC Groningen onder-21.
Om te beschrijven wat zijn eerste profovereenkomst voor hem betekent, schetst David van der Werff een beeld van zijn familie. “Mijn vader en broers zijn allemaal supporter van de club. Mij is het groen-wit met de paplepel ingegeven. Ik had FC Groningen-shirts en sliep onder een FC Groningen-dekbed in een FC Groningen-pyjama. Om dit moment in Euroborg met hen te delen, is heel mooi. De blijdschap die ik voel van binnen, de trots… Ik ga deze dag niet snel vergeten. Het is hopelijk het begin van nog heel veel meer moois. Het voelt alsof ik nu de periode van mijn volwassen carrière inga.”
Van der Werff begon met voetballen bij VV Actief in Eelde-Paterswolde. Hij stroomde in bij de FC Groningen Opleiding op Sportpark Corpus den Hoorn in de onder-12. “Nog steeds tref ik hier jongens die al vanaf het begin op Corpus rondlopen. Dat is positief, net als de goede trainers die ik door de jaren heen in de Opleiding heb gehad.” Over zijn kwaliteiten en ambities zegt Van der Werff: “Ik ben een aanvallende middenvelder met een goed gevoel voor ruimte en een speler die graag de oplossing vooruit zoekt met goede passing. Komend seizoen hoop ik mijn debuut te mogen maken in het eerste elftal. En daarna op weg naar meer”, klinkt het strijdvaardig.
