Mark Tuitert stond veelvuldig op het hoogste podium tijdens een succesvolle schaatscarrière. De kroon op het harde werken werd gezet in Vancouver 2010 toen Tuitert Olympisch Kampioen 1.500 meter werd. Tegenwoordig runt de voormalig topsporter zijn eigen onderneming, is hij schrijver en ook public speaker. Tuitert was tijdens de promotiedagen Noord-Nederland één van de sprekers in het Word Groter Theater van FC Groningen. Hij deelde een indrukwekkend en inspirerend verhaal.
Tuitert was op jonge leeftijd naar eigen zeggen geen supertalent, maar rolde bij toeval de topsport in. Aan de start van zijn carrière zag de langebaan schaatser dat hij zelf de belangrijkste schakel was richting succes. “Ik heb autonoom mijn eigen pad bepaald en zag dat wanneer ik harder ging werken, meer mijn best deed, ik ook meer kon leren. Dat maakte me beter. Ik had het zelf in de hand en als ik merk dat ik ergens goed in ben, ga ik all-in.”
Het (sport)leven van Tuitert kende niet alleen successen, maar zowel op de ijsbaan als in de privésfeer ook grote tegenslagen en verlies. “Tegenslagen heb je liever niet, maar in de moeilijkste momenten liggen de grootste lessen. Bij ieder moeilijk moment probeer ik een les te leren. Lessen die ik nodig heb gehad om Olympisch Kampioen te kunnen worden en lessen waardoor ik het leven omarm.”
