Gerard Wiekens is volgend seizoen de trainer van RVO FC Groningen/Cambuur C3 en daarmee de opvolger van René Wollerich. Wiekens tekent een overeenkomst voor één seizoen.
Wiekens (40) is oud-speler van SC Veendam en Manchester City en was tot voor kort assistent-trainer van SC Veendam. Ook is hij in die hoedanigheid als assistent-trainer betrokken bij Jong FC Groningen.
Wiekens was als jeugdspeler actief voor VV Noordster, voordat hij in de jeugdopleiding van BV Veendam terecht kwam. Op 17-jarige leeftijd maakte hij daar zijn debuut in het eerste elftal. Tussen 1990 en 1997 in totaal 204 wedstrijden voor BV Veendam.
Tussen 1997 en 2004 was hij in Engeland actief voor Manchester City. Daar kwam hij tot 182 optredens. Daarna keerde hij terug naar Veendam en speelde nog eens 133 duels. Na zijn actieve carrière werd hij in 2010 assistent-trainer bij de geel-zwarten. Onlangs ging de Oost-Groningse club failliet.
Gerard Wiekens is blij met zijn aanstelling als trainer van RVO FC Groningen/Cambuur C3. “Ik ben drie jaar assistent geweest bij SC Veendam en heb daar met senioren gewerkt. Mijn hart ligt bij het trainen van junioren en daartoe krijg ik nu de kans. De afgelopen jaren heb ik altijd een afweging moeten maken tussen Veendam en Groningen. Veendam was natuurlijk mijn tweede huis. Door het faillissement bij Veendam is er geen keuze en kies ik met veel plezier voor FC Groningen.”
“Binnen de club FC Groningen ben ik reeds bekend met de Beloften. De komende weken zal ik enkele dagen in de week gaan meelopen bij de diverse teams binnen de jeugdopleiding. Op 4 juni begint de voorbereiding op het nieuwe seizoen en zal ik de huidige onder-13 lichting onder mijn hoede krijgen.”
Wiekens hoopt komend seizoen ook te worden toegelaten tot de cursus TCI-jeugd. “Ik ben ik het bezit van TCII en werd afgelopen seizoen helaas niet toegelaten. Inmiddels heb ik me opnieuw ingeschreven en ik hoop de komende weken een telefoontje te krijgen voor een gesprek. Wanneer dat precies zal zijn, moet ik nog even afwachten.”
