Giliano Wijnaldum vertrekt bij FC Groningen. De 21-jarige verdediger maakt de overstap naar Go Ahead Eagles. Wijnaldum kwam vorig seizoen transfervrij over van AZ en had in Euroborg nog een doorlopende verbintenis van één seizoen.
Wijnaldum kwam in zijn eerste seizoen bij FC Groningen tot dertig officiële wedstrijden, waarin hij één keer scoorde. Dat was in Breda bij het 2-2 gelijkspel tegen NAC. Wijnaldum stond 26 keer aan de aftrap, maar verloor zijn basisplaats na de winterstop aan Lorenzo Burnet. Oplossing Manager technische zaken Henk Veldmate van FC Groningen zegt over de overgang van Wijnaldum naar Deventer: “In een gesprek met Wijnaldum is duidelijk geworden dat hij komend seizoen niet de eerste keus zou worden op de linksbackpositie of in het centrum van de verdediging. Omdat hij zelf graag aan spelen wil toekomen, hebben we gekeken naar een oplossing. Toen Go Ahead zich bij ons meldde, zijn we met elkaar in gesprek gegaan en dat heeft tot deze transfer geleid.”
FC Groningen gaat bekijken of en hoe de selectie van trainer Erwin van de Looi in defensief opzicht eventueel weer versterkt kan worden.
