FC Groningen speelt vanavond in Guimaraes tegen de Portugese kampioen Benfica. De wedstrijd begint net als vrijdag om 22.15 uur Nederlandse tijd.
Zaterdagochtend om 11.15 uur Portugese tijd werkte FC Groningen een training af van ongeveer anderhalf uur op het complex van Vitoria Guimaraes. Na de nabespreking en de warming-up werd begonnen met een pass- en trapoefening in drie verschillende groepen. Daarna werd met tien tegen tien op de aanvalsopbouw en positiespel geoefend. Tenslotte vuurden de achttien fitte spelers nog tientallen Jabulani-ballen af op doelmannen Leonard Nienhuis en Luciano da Silva.
Doelman Brian van Loo (kuit), Oluwafemi Ajilore (heup) en Tim Sparv (enkel/teen) trainden vanmorgen niet mee met de groep en zijn niet inzetbaar tegen Benfica. De opstelling zal vanavond bekend worden gemaakt. Trainer Pieter Huistra zal met zijn ploeg voor de tweede keer binnen 24 uur aantreden in het Estadio D. Afonso Henriques: “We zullen weer beter met de tegenstand proberen om te gaan dan vrijdagavond. Met welk team Benfica zij exact zullen aantreden, zullen we vanavond pas zien. Er is een aantal WK-gangers binnen hun selectie, maar het is mij op dit moment nog niet bekend of die alweer zullen meedoen. Het is zeker een leuke uitdaging om tegen de Portugese kampioen aan te treden.”
