Brian van Loo (38) gaat vanaf januari 2014 als interim-keeperstrainer bij FC Groningen aan de slag. Hij neemt de taken waar van Sierd van der Berg bij het eerste elftal en Jong FC Groningen. Binnen de jeugdopleiding zijn John van Rotterdam (39) en Peter van der Vlag (36) als tijdelijke vervangers aangesteld.
Bij keeperstrainer Sierd van der Berg werd vorige maand leukemie geconstateerd. Momenteel ondergaat hij daarvoor een zware behandeling.
Om de tijdelijke vacature in te vullen is FC Groningen op zoek gegaan naar invalkrachten. In de tussentijd heeft teammanager Bas Roorda de honneurs waargenomen bij het eerste elftal en de Beloften en hebben keeperstrainers Henk Ritsema en Rick Havinga binnen de jeugdopleiding de werkzaamheden overgenomen.
Per januari 2014 zal oud-FC-doelman Brian van Loo de doelmannen van het eerste elftal en de Beloften onder zijn hoede nemen. Van Loo keepte tussen 2007 en 2011 in 93 officiële wedstrijden voor FC Groningen. Tussen 2011 en 2013 stond Van Loo onder contract bij zijn oude club, Heracles Almelo.
Begin september beëindigde Van Loo zijn actieve loopbaan en sinds oktober hield Van Loo zijn conditie op peil bij Heracles Almelo. Van Loo beraadt zich in deze fase op zijn toekomst en is beschikbaar om de tijdelijke vacature in te vullen, te beginnen tijdens het trainingskamp van FC Groningen in het Spaanse Oliva. De situatie rond de beschikbaarheid van Van der Berg zal vervolgens van maand tot maand worden beoordeeld.
Binnen de jeugdopleiding van FC Groningen werden de taken in de afgelopen periode waargenomen door Henk Ritsema en Rick Havinga. Na de winterstop komen Van Rotterdam en Van der Vlag de keepersstaf versterken op Corpus den Hoorn. Van Rotterdam speelde in de jeugd van BV Veendam en Van der Vlag bij Veendam, Go Ahead Eagles, Cambuur en momenteel voor FC Emmen in de Jupiler League.
