Nick van der Velden speelt de komende twee seizoenen voor FC Groningen. De middenvelder speelde de afgelopen seizoenen voor NEC en komt transfervrij over naar Euroborg.
Van der Velden (31) speelde in zijn jeugd voor De Volewijckers en DWS in zijn geboortestad Amsterdam. Vervolgens speelde hij achtereenvolgens voor RKC Waalwijk, FC Dordrecht, AZ en NEC. In Alkmaar maakte hij deel uit van de selectie die in 2009 de landstitel won en vervolgens de Johan Cruijff Schaal.
De afgelopen twee seizoenen speelde Van der Velden voor NEC in de Eredivisie. In totaal speelde hij 176 competitieduels in het betaalde voetbal en maakte hij 33 doelpunten. In de afgelopen twee seizoenen kwam hij bij NEC tot 50 wedstrijden en zes doelpunten.
Van der Velden zal zondagmiddag in Haren meteen zijn opwachting maken op de eerste training van FC Groningen in het seizoen 2013/2014. Hij is de eerste versterking van buiten de club voor de selectie van trainer Erwin van de Looi.
