Thom van Bergen is de eerste genomineerde voor de eretitel Best Western Strijder van het Jaar 2023. De spits van FC Groningen onder-21 trainde de laatste periode structureel mee met de eerste selectie en zat tijdens verschillende wedstrijden in de Eredivisie op de bank.
Bij FC Groningen onder-21, onder leiding van trainer/coach/manager Sander van Gessel, scoort Van Bergen aan de lopende band. Van Bergen is jaren geleden ingestroomd binnen de FC Groningen Opleiding in de onder-12 selectie. “Je komt bij FC Groningen als kleine jongen met de droom om het eerste te halen. Ik ben nog speler van Onder-21, zo voelt het ook, maar het is mooi dat ik met het eerste mag trainen. We zijn nu een aantal jaar verder en ik heb me als mens en voetballer hier kunnen ontwikkelen.”
Binnen de Opleiding wordt gewerkt volgens drie leerlijnen; Presteren als Voetballer, Bewegen als Atleet en Leven als Topsporter. De eerste leerlijn focust zich op de prestaties van de speler op het veld, bij de tweede leerlijn gaat het naast de fysieke groei over breed motorische ontwikkeling en met de derde leerlijn laat de Opleiding de spelers het belang inzien van professionaliteit buiten het veld. De invloed van slaap, voeding, gedrag op de sportprestaties en de groei als topsporter.
Vijf keer per seizoen kunnen trainer/coach/managers een speler nomineren die in hun ogen in aanmerking komt voor de titel Best Western Strijder van het Jaar. Na onderling overleg wordt er iedere keer één speler daadwerkelijk genomineerd. Om genomineerd te worden voor de titel Best Western Strijder van het Jaar wil staf en begeleiding gedrag bij spelers zien die past bij de kernwaarden van de Opleiding; aanpakken, reëel en groei.
Een speler die iedere dag het beste uit zichzelf wil halen. Die strijdt voor het beste resultaat en veel energie stopt in wat hij doet. Iemand die initiatief neemt zowel binnen als buiten de lijnen en geen excuses kent. Een nuchter en oprecht persoon. Afgelopen seizoen werd Thijmen Blokzijl uitgeroepen tot Best Western Strijder van het Jaar 2022. Een jaar eerder ging de eretitel naar Bjorn Meijer.
