FC Groningen belegt in de tweede week van januari een trainingskamp. De selectie van trainer Ron Jans verblijft van 6 tot en met 12 januari in Marbella om zich daar voor te bereiden op de tweede seizoenshelft.
FC Groningen speelt de laatste competitiewedstrijd van 2008 op zondag 28 december, thuis tegen sc Heerenveen. Daarna heeft de eerste selectie een week vrijaf tot en met 5 januari. Op dinsdag 6 januari vliegt de groep naar de Spaanse luchthaven van Malaga. Van daaruit wordt verder gereisd naar het onderkomen in Marbella. Op maandag 12 januari keert de selectie weer terug in Groningen. Eén oefenwedstrijd In Marbella staat, naast de trainingen, één oefenwedstrijd gepland en wel op zaterdag 10 januari tegen NEC. De Nijmegenaren verblijven in die periode eveneens aan de Costa del Sol in Zuid-Spanje. FC Groningen hervat op zondag 18 januari de competitie met een uitwedstrijd tegen Sparta Rotterdam.
