Sinds januari 2003 zet FC Groningen het Amateurconvenant in als middel om beter samen te werken met verenigingen in Noord-Nederland. Als Betaald Voetbal Organisatie wil FC Groningen inspelen op de voorbeeldfunctie en voortrekkersrol bij de samenwerking met amateurverengingen.
Momenteel zijn er 162 verenigingen aangesloten bij het Amateurconvenant. De laatste vereniging die in het vervolg nieuwsbrieven en uitnodigingen van kaartenacties ontvangt zijn de studenten van The Knickerbockers uit de stad Groningen. Deze club zal niet zozeer bijdragen aan één van de pijlers van het Amateurconvenant, namelijk het verbeteren van jeugdvoetbalniveau in Noord-Nederland, maar is in het stimuleren van de voetbalbeleving zeer actief.
In navolging vv Bellingwolde organiseerde The Knickerbockers in het kader van hun goede doelen dag, diverse activiteiten om geld in te zamelen voor Kids United. Kids United is een voetbalvereniging voor kinderen met een beperking en geadopteerd door FC Groningen.
Zo verzamelde de studenten geld in voor Kids United door het ophalen van statiegeld, het houden van een slakkenrace en het verkopen van programmaboekjes. Ook ging een deel van de kantineomzet van afgelopen zaterdag naar het goede doel.
Uit handen van Bjorn Boes (FC Groningen in de Maatschappij) en Niek Hollewand (coördinator Amateurconvenant) ontving de TKB voorzitter het eerste Meer dan Voetbal-certificaat, waarmee FC Groningen de vereniging wil belonen voor haar maatschappelijke betrokkenheid.
Uiteraard was ook Kids United actief op het Zernike-complex. Voorafgaande aan het competitieduel van het eerste elftal werden er twee wedstrijden gespeeld. De oudste leden van Kids United speelden tegen een All Stars team van de TKB’ers. De jongere delegatie speelde tegen VV Helpman E2. De overwinning was in beide wedstrijden voor Kids United. De laatste taak van de kinderen was het vormen van de line-up bij de opkomst van TKB 1. Met louter vrolijke gezichten vertrokken de winnaars met de spelersbus van FC Groningen, beschikbaar gesteld door Drenthe Tours, richting huis.
