Tomas Suslov is dinsdagavond in eigen land uitgeroepen tot Slowaaks Voetballer van het Jaar 2021 voor spelers onder 21 jaar. De international ontving op het jaarlijkse voetbalgala van de bond de Peter Dubovsky Award. Suslov was afgelopen zomer de jongste speler van de Slowaakse EK-selectie en kwam twee maal in actie op het eindtoernooi. Onlangs verlengde de aanvallend ingestelde middenvelder zijn contract bij FC Groningen tot 2026.
De 19-jarige Suslov speelde tot op heden negen interlands voor Slowakije. De aanvallende middenvelder won dinsdagavond 22 maart tijdens het Slowaaks voetbalgala de uitverkiezing voor de Peter Dubovsky Award met overmacht. Suslov verzamelde ruim drie keer zoveel punten als de nummer twee Jakub Kadák.
De award voor jong Slowaaks talent is sinds 2000 vernoemd naar voormalig voetballer van onder meer Real Madrid Peter Dubovsky. De Slowaaks international kwam in dat jaar om het leven bij een tragisch ongeval tijdens zijn vakantie. Suslov schaart zich met het winnen van de award in een mooi rijtje met onder andere grote namen als Robert Vittek, Martin Skrtel, Marek Hamsik en Milan Skriniar. Laatst genoemde – speler van Inter – werd tijdens het gala uitgeroepen tot Slowaaks voetballer van het Jaar.
Suslov bereidt zich in eigen land voor op twee oefeninterlands in de komende week op bezoek bij Noorwegen en uit naar Finland. Bij de laatste interland – eind vorig kalenderjaar gespeeld – eiste Suslov een absolute hoofdrol op door in de met 6-0 gewonnen wedstrijd tegen Malta drie assists af te leveren.
De Slowaak doorliep vanaf zijn 16e de Opleiding van FC Groningen, debuteerde in 2020 in het eerste elftal van de Trots van het Noorden en speelde inmiddels 60 officiële wedstrijden voor de FC. Suslov scoorde daarin 3 keer en gaf 10 assists.
