Suk Hyun-Jun zal zijn deelname aan de Peace Cup 2012 niet snel vergeten. De Koreaanse spits was tijdens het toernooi in zijn vaderland de aanvoerder van FC Groningen en in de strijd om de derde plaats scoorde hij met een prachtige omhaal.
Suk is in Suwon de man die alle aandacht opeist. Van pers en publiek. En uitgerekend in de wedstrijd tegen Sunderland krijgt hij in het Suwon World Cup Stadium alle handen op elkaar als hij na 37 minuten met een fantastische omhaal de gelijkmaker op het bord tovert. Maar van grote blijdschap is na afloop geen sprake, want zijn team geeft in de slotfase een zeker lijkende overwinning weg, 3-2 voor Sunderland. “Ik ben heel blij met mijn doelpunt. Het was een mooie goal, maar het was nog mooier geweest als we hadden gewonnen. Ik sta hier nu met een heel slecht gevoel. Ik had zo graag willen winnen.” Marcus Berg De finale van het toernooi werd gewonnen door Hamburger SV, dat vrijdag nog met 1-0 te sterk was geweest voor FC Groningen. Marcus Berg, voormalig spits van de FC, was de man van de avond. Tien minuten voor tijd viel de Zweed in en tekende voor het enige en dus winnende doelpunt tegen Seongnam Ilhwa FC. Berg ontving tijdens de slotceremonie daarom ook nog eens een individuele prijs. Zijn gouden doelpunt leverde hem de titel ‘meest waardevolle speler’ van het toernooi op.
