Maikel Kieftenbeld zal zondagmiddag ontbreken op het wedstrijdformulier als FC Groningen de competitie hervat in de thuiswedstrijd tegen FC Utrecht, aftrap 12.30 uur. De middenvelder is in Spanje tijdens het trainingskamp in Oliva geblesseerd geraakt aan zijn knie. Hij is hiervan nog onvoldoende hersteld om tegen Utrecht van de partij te kunnen zijn.
Kieftenbeld moest vanwege knieklachten de oefenwedstrijden tegen AA Gent en NAC Breda aan het einde van het trainingskamp aan de Spaanse oostkust al aan zich voorbij laten gaan. Ook bij terugkeer in Nederland kon de Essent Speler van het Jaar 2011/2012 de afgelopen week nog niet aanhaken bij de groepstrainingen. Reden voor trainer Robert Maaskant om aan Kieftenbeld te vertellen dat hij zich beter kan richten op een rentree in de selectie als FC Groningen op zondag 27 januari aantreedt tegen N.E.C. in Nijmegen. Binnen Daarnaast ontbraken donderdag nog enkele spelers op het trainingsveld van sportpark De Koepel in Haren. Suk Hyun-Jun, Stefano Magnasco en Emil Johansson bleven na hun inspanningen op woensdagmiddag met Jong FC Groningen in de met 2-1 gewonnen oefenwedstrijd tegen Jong AZ binnen om wat lichte trainingsvormen af te werken.
Centrale verdediger Nick Bakker voelde zich niet volledig fit en werd na overleg met de medische staf naar huis gestuurd om rust te houden. Een andere B-kernspeler, Timo Letschert, was grieperig en werkte de ochtendtraining eveneens binnen af. Paulo Francisco zal voorlopig bij de A-junioren de trainingen gaan volgen.
