FC Groningen heeft afgelopen zondag in Euroborg met 1-1 gelijkgespeeld tegen Vitesse. Namens Vitesse scoorde Traoré de openingstreffer, Chery redde met zijn doelpunt een punt voor de FC: 1-1.
Vanaf de aftrap was het duidelijk met welke intenties de thuisclub de wedstrijd begon. Mahi kreeg meteen al een paar aardige kansen, maar deze wist hij niet te verzilveren. Na de vliegende start van FC Groningen kwam Vitesse iets beter in de wedstrijd. De eerste helft leek te eindigen in een 0-0, maar toch kwam Vitesse op voorsprong..Na een voorzet van Qazaishvili op Traoré stond Martijn van der Laan even op het verkeerde been en kon de spits van Vitesse tekenen voor de 0-1. Meteen hierna dacht Chery het antwoord te hebben, maar zijn harde schot kon nog net over de lat worden getikt door de keeper van Vitesse, Room. FC Groningen ging de rust in met een 0-1 achterstand.
Na de pauze was het duidelijk dat beide ploegen voor de winst wilden gaan. In de 61e minuut was het dan toch raak voor Chery. Een schot van Mahi werd door doelman Room niet goed ingeschat en in de rebound was Chery de meest alerte speler en schoof zo de 1-1 binnen! In de laatste minuut van de extra tijd kreeg de Leeuw nog een enorme kans na een voorzet van Kieftenbeld, maar hij zag de inzet gered worden op de doellijn. Zo bleef het voor de 3e keer op rij gelijk in Euroborg.
Voorafgaand aan de wedstrijd liepen er 14 junior club leden mee aan de hand van de spelers van FC Groningen en de arbitrage: Simon Knapper, Finn Westerhuis, Jorn Westerhuis, Thomas Boskma, Marije Datema, Darron van Lingen, Matthijn Drijfhout, Dylano Soares, Tijn Hoving, Lucas Mens, Thijmen Veening, Lars Akkerman, Yoran Akkerman en Chiel Klugkist.
Komende woensdagavond speelt FC Groningen weer voor de winst, ditmaal om verder te komen in het bekertoernooi. FC Volendam is de tegenstander en de aftrap is om 19.30 uur. Zaterdag sluit FC Groningen de eerste seizoenshelft af met een uitwedstrijd tegen FC Dordrecht om 19.45 uur.
