Jeroen Gies werkt dinsdag en woensdag een tweedaagse stage af bij FC Groningen. De 19-jarige Duitser is doelman bij Werder U21, uitkomend in de Bremen-liga.
FC Groningen maakte voor het eerst kennis met de kwaliteiten van Gies tijdens een indoortoernooi van Jong FC Groningen in het Duitse Cloppenburg, in januari van dit jaar. Later is interim-keeperstrainer Brian van Loo naar een wedstrijd van Werder U21 geweest om daar Gies aan het werk te zien. Hij maakte bij al die gelegenheden een positieve indruk. FC Groningen polste Gies en kreeg van Werder Bremen toestemming om hem uit te nodigen voor een stage. Nederlands Gies is opgetogen over de kans, die hij in Groningen krijgt. “Ik ben half Nederlands. Mijn vader komt uit Deventer, waar mijn grootouders nog altijd wonen. Ik spreek ook behoorlijk Nederlands en het is altijd al een droom van mij geweest om in Nederland te voetballen. Ik krijg nu twee dagen de kans om te laten zien wat ik kan en dat is mooi. We gaan zien hoe het verder loopt.”
Gies zal vandaag en morgen meetrainen bij FC Groningen. Vandaag staat hij op het kunstgrasveld van VV Actief in Eelde, waar de selectie van trainer Erwin van de Looi zich voorbereidt op de competitiewedstrijd van vrijdagavond tegen PEC in Zwolle.
