De eerste selectie van FC Groningen vertrekt vandaag naar Portugal om deel te nemen aan het toernooi om de Troféu Cidade de Guimaraes. Via Bremen, Frankfurt en Porto zal de ploeg vannacht naar verwachting om 0.30 uur plaatselijke tijd aankomen.
Het gezelschap bestaat in totaal uit 35 personen, waarvan 23 spelers. Van de eerste selectie gaan vijf spelers niet mee. Leandro Bacuna is met Oranje onder-19 in voorbereiding op het EK in Frankrijk. WK-gangers Tim Matavz en Thomas Enevoldsen sluiten na het toernooi in Portugal aan. Danny Holla en Petter Andersson blijven in Nederland achter voor hun revalidatie. Vanuit de Beloften gaan Leonard Nienhuis, Danny Menting, Danny Post en Tim Keurntjes mee naar Portugal.
De begeleidingsstaf bestaat uit: trainers Pieter Huistra en Erwin van de Looi, teammanager Theo Huizinga, clubarts Frank Baarveld, fysiotherapeut Peter Eppinga, verzorger Henk Hagenauw, materiaalmannen Henk Sikkema en Bert de Voogd, directeur Hans Nijland, technisch manager Henk Veldmate en redacteur Bas Kammenga. Journalist Karel-Jan Buurke zal RTV Noord vertegenwoordigen.
In Portugal staan donderdag twee trainingen op het programma. Op vrijdag en zaterdag speelt de FC achtereenvolgens tegen gastheer Vitoria Guimaraes en Benfica. Guimaraes eindigde vorig seizoen als zeven in de Portugese competitie. Benfica is de regerend kampioen.
