FC Groningen is gestart met de voorbereiding op het seizoen 2011/2012. Maandagmiddag werkte de selectie de eerste training af in het nieuwe tenue met Essent op de borst. Vier van de zes nieuwelingen waren present in de brandende zon.
Al ruim voor half drie waren de meeste spelers voor een eigen warming-up naar buiten gegaan. Zo konden de paar honderd fans de nieuwe aanwinsten Emil Johansson, Johan Kappelhof, Lorenzo Burnet en Suk Hyun-Jun voor het eerst aanschouwen in het trainingstenue van FC Groningen. Kees Kwakman zal dinsdag pas voor het eerst meetrainen, hij moest nog zaken afhandelen in Duitsland. Matias Jones laat nog een stuk langer op zich wachten. Hij is de komende weken actief voor Uruguay onder-20.
Van de spelers die vorig jaar al actief waren voor Groningen, ontbraken er ook nog drie. Tim Matavz, Tim Sparv en Thomas Enevoldsen hadden begin juni nog interlands gespeeld en hebben daarom een week langer vakantie gekregen. Bijzonder was de aanwezigheid van oud-FC’er Joost Broerse. Hij traint mee om zijn conditie op peil te houden, omdat zijn contract op Cyprus niet werd verlengd en Broerse nog op zoek is naar een nieuwe club.
Aan de hand van de rugnummers werd ook duidelijk dat Virgil van Dijk definitief promotie heeft gemaakt naar de A-kern van de selectie. Leandro Bacuna heeft bovendien gekozen voor rugnummer 7, dat na het vertrek van Andreas Granqvist is vrijgekomen. Naast 18 spelers van de A-kern en Broerse waren alle negen B-kernspelers ook present: Tim Keurntjes, Renze Fij, Atilay Batbay, Nick Bakker, Henk Bos, Luis Pedro da Silva Ferreira, Leonard Nienhuis, Danny Menting en Hilal Ben Moussa.
Na de warming-up volgden enkele pass- en trapoefeningen en bleek dat naast de revaliderende Koen van de Laak ook Nicklas Pedersen niet topfit uit de vier vakantieweken is gekomen. Bij het afsluitende partijspel waar Petter Andersson de eerste officieuze goal van het seizoen voor zijn rekening nam, bleef ook de Zuid-Koreaan Suk uit voorzorg aan de kant. Hij liep bij Zuid-Korea onder-20 een knieblessure op.
