Robert Maaskant zit komende zondag tijdens de uitwedstrijd van FC Groningen tegen VVV-Venlo niet op de bank. Club en trainer accepteerden het schikkingsvoorstel dat de KNVB afgelopen maandag deed.
Maaskant zit één wedstrijd schorsing uit omdat hij afgelopen zaterdag in Eindhoven wegens aanmerkingen op de leiding door scheidsrechter Ruud Bossen naar de tribune werd verwezen. De trainer had zich in de rust van het duel met PSV opgewonden over de arbitrale leiding. Toen Maaskant na de pauze weer plaats wilde nemen in de dug-out werd hem door de vierde official te verstaan gegeven dat hij niet meer welkom was op de bank van FC Groningen. Uitgesproken “Nog voordat de aanklager betaald voetbal met zijn schikkingsvoorstel kwam (afgelopen maandag – red.), had ik het voorval al lang uitgesproken met scheidsrechter Bossen”, vertelt Maaskant. “Ik wil echter geen negatieve aandacht meer vestigen op deze zaak en vind de komende wedstrijd tegen VVV veel belangrijker om ons op te richten. Ik heb de straf dan ook onder protest geaccepteerd.”
Eerder dit seizoen zat Maaskant eveneens een wedstrijd schorsing uit nadat hij naar de tribunes was verwezen tijdens de uitwedstrijd tegen AZ in Alkmaar. Assistent-trainer Erwin van de Looi was een week later de verantwoordelijk coach tijdens FC Groningen – RKC Waalwijk (2-1). De toekomstige hoofdtrainer zal ook zondag in Venlo als coach de honneurs waarnemen.
