Gibril Sankoh is in het bezit van een Nederlands paspoort. De in Sierra Leone geboren verdediger heeft onlangs uit handen van burgemeester Jacq. Wallage het diploma gekregen waarmee hij zijn paspoort-aanvraag kon afhandelen.
Sankoh heeft nu officieel het Nederlands burgerschap verkregen. De Afrikaanse centrale verdediger van FC Groningen kwam negen jaar geleden als vluchteling naar Nederland. Zijn voetbaltalent werd ontdekt door Stormvogels Telstar. FC Groningen haalde hem in 2004 na een half seizoen in de eerste divisie al weg uit Velsen-Zuid. Sinds ongeveer een jaar probeerde Sankoh een Nederlands paspoort te bemachtigen. Dat is nu dus gelukt. Trots “We hebben er een Nederlander bij in de groep”, riep trainer Ron Jans woensdagochtend triomfantelijk over het trainingsveld en hij sloot Sankoh symbolisch in de armen. De hoofdrolspeler zelf lachte. “Ik ben er blij mee. Ik heb een Nederlands paspoort en een ID-kaart”, die hij vervolgens met veel trots als teken van bewijs liet zien.
“Zowel voor het praktijk-gedeelte in Zwolle als het theorie-examen van de inburgeringcursus in Groningen ben ik bij de tweede keer geslaagd. De tweede keer had ik van de vijftig vragen er twee fout. Nadat ik uit Den Haag bericht had gekregen dat ik in aanmerking kwam voor een Nederlands paspoort ben ik naar de gemeente gegaan en heb ik hoogstpersoonlijk van de burgemeester het bijbehorende diploma ontvangen. Daarna kon ik de aanvraag officieel afronden. Vanaf nu wil ik achter mijn naam de Nederlandse nationaliteit hebben staan”, aldus een opgewekte Sankoh.
