FC Groningen heeft woensdagmiddag de eerste oefenwedstrijd van het kalenderjaar 2020 verloren. De Trots van het Noorden ging in het Duitse Rödinghausen met 2-0 onderuit tegen SV Rödinghausen. Bij rust stond het nog 0-0. De selectie van hoofdtrainer Danny Buijs reisde na de oefenwedstrijd door en verblijft de komende dagen in het Limburgse Horst op trainingskamp.
FC Groningen was dinsdagmiddag met 26 spelers al richting Duitsland getrokken voor het oefenduel met SV Rödinghausen. De Eredivisionist werd binnen een kwartier voor het eerst gevaarlijk via Mo El Hankouri met een schot over het doel. De grootste kans voor rust was ook voor El Hankouri. De aanvaller snelde na ruim een half uur spelen langs zijn tegenstander, maar stuitte op keeper Niclas Heimann. Hierdoor bleef het doelpuntloos en gingen beide ploegen met een 0-0 ruststand de pauze in.
Na rust zagen de toeschouwers in het Häcker Wiehenstadion twee totaal gewijzigde teams. Bij FC Groningen bleef alleen keeper Jan Hoekstra staan, bij de Duitsers kwamen er zelfs elf nieuwe namen uit de kleedkamer. De thuisploeg kwam na een kleine tien minuten spelen op voorsprong doordat een slordigheid in de Groningse opbouw werd afgestraft, 1-0.
Enkele minuten later werd de score door de Duitsers verdubbeld en keek FC Groningen tegen een 2-0 achterstand aan. Een snelle counter werd doeltreffend afgerond door de koploper van de Duitse Regionalliga West. Groningen probeerde het in het laatste half uur van de wedstrijd wel met schotpogingen van Thijs Dallinga, Remco Balk en Tomas Suslov, maar kwam niet tot scoren en verloor zodoende de eerste oefenwedstrijd van het kalenderjaar 2020 met 2-0.
FC Groningen reist vanuit Rödinghausen verder naar het Limburgse Horst waar de komende dagen een trainingskamp staat gepland. Aankomende zaterdag sluit de Trots van het Noorden de trip af met een oefenwedstrijd tegen Rot-Weiss Essen. In Stadion Essen wordt zaterdag om 15.00 uur afgetrapt.
