Het jongste jeugdelftal van de RVO verblijft momenteel in Engeland, waar het vanmiddag de Premier League wedstrijd Stoke City - Arsenal zal bezoeken in het Brittania Stadium. Elftalleider Kick Mulder bericht dagelijks vanuit Engeland.
Dag 2:
Na de wedstrijd van vrijdagavond waren de meeste jongens helemaal uitgeteld, waardoor het voor ons geen enkel probleem was om ze op tijd in bed te krijgen. Na een goede nacht en een stevig Engels ontbijt werd weer koers gezet naar de Stoke City FC Academy, het trainingscomplex van de Premier League club. Hier werd een gezamenlijke training met Stoke U12 afgewerkt, zodat over en weer bekeken kon worden hoe de jeugd onder handen genomen wordt. Enkele licht geblesseerde jongens werkten een pittige hersteltraining af met mij op de kunstgrasvelden. Voor mij ook een goede training met het oog op de 4 Mijl… Ook de meegereisde ouders waren weer van de partij om de trainingssessie te aanschouwen. Een enkeling van hen had een zichtbaar korte nacht gehad…
Na de lunch in het hotel was het aan de jongens om te zeggen hoe het middagprogramma ingevuld zou worden. En waar je zou denken dat de keuze zou vallen op een rustige activiteit, werd unaniem besloten om ‘s middags opnieuw een training af te werken…. Vanaf het moment dat deze jongens ‘s morgens hun ogen openen zijn het net stuiterballen die pas ‘s avonds laat onder dwang willen ophouden met praten en rennen…
Het hotel biedt naast uitstekende kamers ook allerlei andere faciliteiten zoals een sportschool en enkele squashbanen. Na het avondeten inspireerde dit de jongens om de leider van de baan te vegen. En een veegpartije werd het…voor de jongens dan. Tommie en Jochem hadden niets in te brengen tegen een toch niet al te makkelijk bewegende leider…
Daar hield het voor de jongens op voor de dag, de staf ging nog even de stad in voor een drankje. En midden in het uitgaansgebied van Stoke-On-Trent werd keer op keer duidelijk wat Peter hier voor het voetbal heeft betekend. In zijn drie seizoenen hier groeide hij uit tot een publiekslieveling die nu, jaren na dato, nog altijd immens populair is en tientallen malen moest poseren voor een foto met wildenthousiaste fans.
Dit belooft nog wat voor de dag van vandaag als we de wedstrijd gaan bezoeken. Daarover morgen meer, tot dan!
