Het was wikken en wegen en plussen en minnen tegen elkaar wegstrepen, met als uiteindelijke uitkomst dat Arjen Robben zijn voetbalschoenen definitief opbergt. Het hoofd en het hart wilden nog heel graag, maar de sterspeler met roots in de Opleiding van FC Groningen liep toch tegen te veel fysieke drempels aan. “Uiteindelijk moet je ook eerlijk zijn naar jezelf, maar deze beslissing moet nog wel even indalen."
Arjen Robben is met twaalf landstitels in vier verschillende landen de meest succesvolle Nederlandse clubvoetballer ooit. De aanvaller uit Bedum is van jongs af aan een prijzenpakker. Overal waar Robben naartoe transfereert, wordt hij direct in zijn eerste seizoen landskampioen. Van FC Groningen naar PSV, naar Chelsea, naar Real Madrid en 10 jaar lang Bayern München. Daarnaast worden tal van bekers in de rijk gevulde prijzenkast gezet. Een persoonlijk hoogtepunt voor de vleugelaanvaller is de finale van de Champions League in 2013 in Londen. De spits van Bayern München maakt de enige en dus winnende treffer in het duel met rivaal Borussia Dortmund. De Europese hoofdprijs levert hem in Zuid-Duitsland de bijnaam ‘Mr. Wembley’ op.
Held Na twaalf landstitels, zes voetbaleindrondes met het Nederlands Elftal en 96 Oranje-caps komt er nu een definitief einde aan de imposante voetbalcarrière van Arjen Robben. Mede vanwege zijn comeback bij FC Groningen, de getoonde clubliefde en zijn niet aflatende doorzettingsvermogen heeft hij een onbeschrijflijk gevoel van trots naar boven weten te halen bij alle Groningers en is Robben voor alles en iedereen rondom de club voor eeuwig een ware held.
