De provincie Groningen trekt 700.000 euro subsidie uit voor de bouw van het Topsportzorgcentrum. Het gebouw op Sportpark Corpus den Hoorn wordt een combinatie van topsport, zorg en kennis.
In het Topsportzorgcentrum, waarvan Gerard Kemkers de manager is, komt onder meer een kenniscentrum voor gezond sporten en een ontmoetingscentrum voor topsporters. Het geld komt uit het Ruimtelijk Economisch Programma Zuiderzeelijn, de compensatiegelden voor het niet-doorgaan van de Zuiderzeelijn. Investering De investering in het Topsportzorgcentrum bedraagt in totaal circa 10 miljoen euro. Partijen willen in 2016 van start gaan met de bouw. Het Topsportzorgcentrum wordt een pand van 5.000m2 met vier verdiepingen, waarin vergaderruimtes en zorg- en horecavoorzieningen worden ondergebracht. Tevens is er een topsporthal aan gekoppeld. Gestimuleerd Door het centrum worden mensen gestimuleerd meer te gaan sporten en gezonder te gaan leven. Ook is er ruimte voor (medische) begeleiding van topsporters in Noord-Nederland. Onderdeel van het Topsportzorgcentrum wordt het Sports Science Institute Groningen, waarin de RuG, de Hanzehogeschool, het UMCG en de Gemeente Groningen gaan samenwerken op het gebied van onderzoek.
Het Topsportzorgcentrum is een initiatief van FC Groningen.
