Sergio Padt is de nieuwe eerste doelman van FC Groningen. Vandaag, dinsdag 24 juni, trainde de 24-jarige keeper voor het eerst mee met de selectie van trainer Erwin van de Looi. Padt kijkt uit naar het nieuwe seizoen. “Dit is een mooie kans om me weer in de kijker te spelen.”
De bij Ajax opgeleide keeper omschrijft zijn start bij FC Groningen niet voor niets op deze wijze. Padt moest namelijk het laatste halve jaar van het vorige seizoen tandenknarsend toekijken vanaf de bank in het Belgische KAA Gent. “In de winterstop verloor ik bij Gent om onduidelijke redenen mijn basisplaats. De toenmalige trainer was niet een man waar je naar binnenstapte om op zijn kantoor tekst en uitleg te vragen. Ik heb me als een professional opgesteld en ben gewoon mijn ding blijven doen: hard trainen en laten zien dat ik er klaar voor zou zijn als er weer een beroep op mij gedaan zou worden.” Tevreden Die oproep kwam er niet. Niettemin was zijn werkgever uitermate tevreden over de kwaliteiten van Padt. “Ik had nog een één jaar doorlopend contract in Gent. De club was bereid overal in mee te denken, zoals tijdelijke verhuur en verlenging van het contract. Bijna alles was bespreekbaar als ik maar eigendom van Gent zou blijven. Ik wilde echter niet het risico lopen dat ik weer een seizoen op de bank terecht zou komen. Op mijn leeftijd is het van groot belang wekelijks te spelen en ervaring op te doen om me verder te kunnen ontwikkelen.” Snel en slagvaardig Daarom zette Padt zijn zaakwaarnemer Karel Jansen van het bekende bureau Sport-Promotion aan het werk om zijn carrière een nieuwe impuls te geven. “Er was meer belangstelling van andere clubs, maar nadat FC Groningen Marco Bizot zag vertrekken, hebben ze heel snel en slagvaardig gehandeld. Ik had eigenlijk direct een goed gevoel toen FC Groningen zich meldde. De club is van oudsher een echte volksclub, speelt in een prachtig stadion en heeft een uitstekende selectie staan, die bovendien Europees voetbal gaat spelen. Het is dan ook een kans, die ik met beide handen wil aangrijpen.”
