Oud-voorzitter Renze de Vries is maandag op 81-jarige leeftijd overleden in een verzorgingshuis in Assen. De Vries was van 1976 tot 1989 bestuurslid bij FC Groningen.
De Vries werd op 5 oktober 1930 geboren te Marum. Hij was varkenshandelaar en trad in 1976 toe tot het bestuur van FC Groningen. De Rodenaar was tussen 1976 en 1980 vice-voorzitter in het toenmalige bestuur van de club. Van 1980 tot 1989 was hij voorzitter.
Onder leiding van De Vries promoveerde FC Groningen naar de Eredivisie en bereikte het in 1983 voor het eerst Europees voetbal. Ook stoomde de FC op tot de Nederlandse subtop. De Vries had in de jaren tachtig bovendien zitting in het sectiebestuur betaald voetbal van de KNVB. Op 3 februari 1989 trad De Vries af in verband met een zwartgeld-affaire.
In december 2005 werd de stadionboog van het voormalige Stadion Oosterpark door leden van de Z-Side symbolisch overhandigd aan De Vries in het kader van het afscheid van het stadion. De laatste jaren bracht De Vries nog enkele bezoeken aan Euroborg.
