Vandaag op 1 juli wordt Keti Koti gevierd. Scholengemeenschap het Noorderpoort organiseerde een themaweek over de feestdag waarbij wordt stilgestaan bij de afschaffing van de Nederlandse slavernij in Suriname en de Antillen. Voormalig FC’er Kurt Elshot was in Euroborg gastspreker en ging met studenten van het Noorderpoort in gesprek over dit belangrijke onderwerp.
De Nederlandse slavernij in Suriname en op de Antillen werd afgeschaft op 1 juli in 1863. Een belangrijk moment om jaarlijks bij stil te staan, zo vindt het Noorderpoort en ook FC Groningen. Racisme en discriminatie is helaas ook in de huidige tijd nog aan de orde van de dag. Op straat, op school, in een voetbalstadion.
Kurt Elshot werd in 1977 geboren in Paramaribo en groeide op in Groningen. Als echte Stadjer brak de verdediger door bij zijn FC Groningen. De rechtsback groeide uit tot publiekslieveling in het Oosterpark waarbij hij in de harten van de FC-supporters is gesloten. Echter heeft de voetballer in zijn loopbaan ook te maken gehad met discriminatie.
Tijdens Keti Koti op 1 juli wordt op veel plaatsen in Nederland via een viering en festivals stilgestaan bij het afschaffen van de Nederlandse slavernij in Suriname en op de Antillen. Een belangrijk moment om jaarlijks aandacht voor te creëren. FC Groningen faciliteerde een bijeenkomst in Euroborg georganiseerd door Scholengemeenschap het Noorderpoort waarbij Elshot gastspreker was en waarbij een open gesprek werd gevoerd met studenten over racisme en discriminatie in de hedendaagse maatschappij.
De bijeenkomst was onderdeel van de themaweek binnen het Noorderpoort over Keti Koti. De club vindt het eervol hierbij betrokken te zijn. FC Groningen wil een club zijn waar iedereen zich welkom en veilig voelt en waar geen plaats is voor racisme, discriminatie of elke ander vorm van uitsluiting.
