Martijn Meerdink beëindigt per direct zijn actieve voetballoopbaan. De Winterswijker die door FC Groningen is verhuurd aan De Graafschap raakte in het begin van dit seizoen geblesseerd aan zijn knie.
Na twee operaties en maandenlange revalidatie heeft Meerdink uiteindelijk besloten te stoppen met betaald voetbal. “We hebben alles geprobeerd, maar het haalt niets uit. De pijn blijft en daar is niets meer aan te doen. Hoe moeilijk het ook is, ik moet aan mijn gezondheid denken en aan de toekomst,” aldus Meerdink. “Het doet mij pijn, juist nu deze keuze te moeten maken. Ik zal de selectie van De Graafschap de rest van dit seizoen blijven steunen.”
Martijn Meerdink is 33 jaar en speelde vanaf 1998 in het betaalde voetbal. Hij begon bij De Graafschap en keerde daar via AZ en FC Groningen in 2009 terug. De middenvelder speelde 229 competitiewedstrijden in het betaalde voetbal en scoorde 41 keer, tevens speelde Meerdink één interland.
De Graafschap heeft de intentie om Meerdink in een andere functie voor de club te behouden. “We gaan nu kijken op welke positie we Martijn kunnen inzetten, we denken aan een functie bij ons Voetbalcollege, de scouting en natuurlijk op PR gebied,” aldus Directeur Voetbalzaken Leen Looijen van De Graafschap.
