De selectie en staf van FC Groningen zijn dinsdagmorgen rond de klok van 10.45 uur lokale tijd geland op de luchthaven van Seoul. Na een rustige vlucht van KL 865 met de reuze Boeing ‘Jakarta’ werd de FC-delegatie op het vliegveld in Zuid-Korea direct geconfronteerd met de omvang van de Peace Cup, het internationale toernooi waaraan vrijdag en zondag wordt deelgenomen.
Direct uit het vliegtuig stond er al een Koreaanse vertegenwoordiger klaar met een bord met het logo van de club erop. Onder zijn begeleiding ging het richting bagageband. Nadat alle spullen waren verzameld, ging het onder begeleiding van nog meer Koreanen richting uitgang. Door de schuifdeuren waren de eerste cameralenzen al te zien en toen de spelers passeerden, volgde een zee van licht. Tientallen Aziatische fotografen lieten de camera’s onophoudelijk flitsen. Middelpunt Middelpunt van alle belangstelling vormde vanzelfsprekend Suk Hyun-Jun. De Koreaanse spits van FC Groningen keert terug op zijn geboortegrond en is in zijn vaderland een grote naam. Poseren, lachen, interviews geven, weer poseren en nog maar eens lachen. Suk was dinsdag het mannetje. Al mocht David Texeira zich in de persoonlijke belangstelling verheugen van een Japanse fan, die in augustus naar Nederland zal reizen en in Euroborg de competitiewedstrijd FC Groningen-Willem II zal bijwonen. Vrijdag en zondag zit ze tijdens de Peace Cup op de tribune van het Suwon World Cup Stadium. Ramada Plaza Nadat de volledige groep op een persfoto was gezet, kon het gezelschap richting bus. Na meer dan een uur rijden door het drukke stadsverkeer arriveerden spelers en trainers bij het Ramada Plaza hotel in Suwon. Het is dan inmiddels al ver na het plaatselijke middaguur. De Groningse groep werd bij het hotel welkom geheten door algemeen directeur Hans Nijland en manager technische zaken Henk Veldmate, die een dag eerder al de vlucht naar Seoul hadden genomen met in hun kielzog een afvaardiging van hoofdsponsor Essent en leden van de Raad van Commissarissen.
