Clubicoon Martin Koeman werd zondagmiddag in Euroborg voorafgaand aan FC Groningen – FC Utrecht in het zonnetje gezet. Hij werd onlangs 75 jaar en is reeds vijftig jaar betrokken bij FC Groningen en GVAV.
Van algemeen directeur Hans Nijland kreeg hij enkele mooie woorden mee en bovendien mag Koeman sr. een weekendje weg met zijn vrouw. De keuze is gevallen op één van de Waddeneilanden.
Koeman sprak vervolgens zelf uit dat hij graag zag dat FC Groningen de drie punten in Euroborg zou houden. En daaraan gaf de ploeg van trainer Erwin van de Looi ook gehoor. Groningen won met 2-0 en staat tweede op de ranglijst van de Eredivisie. Clubincoon Martin Koeman speelde 281 officiële wedstrijden voor GVAV en nog 54 voor FC Groningen. Hij speelde in 1964 één duel in het Nederlands Elftal en werd nog eens zes keer geselecteerd voor Oranje.
Na zijn actieve carrière bekleedde hij de functies van trainer en technisch manager. Hij is ‘geestelijk vader’ van de jeugdopleiding van FC Groningen en was daar coördinator en begeleider van jonge talenten. Momenteel doet Koeman nog altijd scoutingswerkzaamheden voor de club.
In oktober 2011 werd de familietribune achter het doel aan zuidzijde van Euroborg door de supporters van FC Groningen officieel tot de Koeman Tribune uitgeroepen. Hiermee kreeg niet alleen Martin, maar ook zijn twee voetbalzonen Erwin en Ronald, een permanente naamsvermelding in het stadion van hun club.
