Stefano Magnasco vertrekt per direct bij FC Groningen. De vleugelverdediger verruilt de Trots van het Noorden voor zijn oude club Universidad Católica uit Chili. FC Groningen ontvangt een transferbedrag van 230.000 US Dollar voor de vleugelverdediger en heeft een percentage van 15 procent bedongen bij een eventuele toekomstige doorverkoop.
Stefano Magnasco speelde gedurende twee seizoenen in totaal 31 wedstrijden voor FC Groningen. De 21-jarige Chileen was voorafgaand aan het seizoen 2012/2013 één van de acht nieuwelingen in de selectie van FC Groningen. De verdediger veroverde al snel een basisplaats, kwam na een aantal wedstrijden op een zijspoor terecht, maar heroverde aan het eind van dat seizoen zijn plaats in het elftal.
Basisplek Magnasco verloor dit kalenderjaar wederom zijn plek in de basisopstelling. Door een vervelende armbreuk, opgelopen tijdens de training, vertrok de Chileen afgelopen seizoen vroegtijdig naar zijn geboorteland om te revalideren. Magnasco meldde zich deze voorbereiding weer fit in Groningen, maar had in de pikorde Hans Hateboer als rechtsback voor zich. FC Groningen heeft aan de transfer meegewerkt omdat Magnasco ook dit seizoen geen aanspraak leek te kunnen gaan maken op een basisplaats.
Na diverse gesprekken over en weer was het voor beide partijen uiteindelijk gewenst tot een definitieve oplossing te komen. Niettemin ziet Magnasco duidelijk op tegen zijn vertrek uit Groningen. “Ik heb er twee nachten lang niet van kunnen slapen. Ik moest allerlei afwegingen maken en een belangrijke beslissing nemen over mijn toekomst. Het is een grote verandering in mijn leven. Maar gezien de omstandigheden is dit voor mij op dit moment toch de beste optie. Maar ik heb zeker mixed emotions.”
Afscheid Magnasco keert terug naar vriendin en familie. “Zij zijn blij, maar het afscheid hier valt me zwaar.” Vooral zijn inzet en drang naar voren maakten Magnasco zeer geliefd bij het Groningse publiek. “De club en de supporters zijn al die tijd geweldig voor me geweest. Ik voelde dat de supporters sympathie hadden voor mijn spel. Ze hebben me ook altijd gesteund en aangemoedigd. Dat was heel speciaal en zal ik niet snel ergens weer vinden.”
Magnasco tekent bij zijn voormalige club een nieuwe driejarige overeenkomst. Bij Universidad Católica staat ook oud-FC’er Matias Cahais onder contract. FC Groningen gaat zich beraden op welke wijze het vertrek van Magnasco wordt ingevuld.
