KNVB-coach Cor Pot heeft twintig spelers opgenomen in zijn selectie voor de oefenwedstrijd tegen Jong Engeland in Groningen. De ploeg speelt dinsdag 11 augustus in Euroborg de eerste interland van het nieuwe seizoen. Onder hen is ook doelman Leonard Nienhuis van FC Groningen.
De selectie bestaat uit: Vurnon Anita (Ajax), Nacer Barazite (Arsenal), Diego Biseswar (Feyenoord), Daley Blind (Ajax), Jeffrey Bruma (Chelsea), Mitchell Donald (Ajax), Rens van Eijden (N.E.C.), Marvin Emnes (Middlesbrough), Leroy Fer (Feyenoord), Jan-Arie van der Heijden (Ajax), Daryl Janmaat (sc Heerenveen), Siem de Jong (Ajax), Tim Krul (Newcastle United), Nicky Kuiper (FC Twente), Kelvin Leerdam (Feyenoord), Leonard Nienhuis (FC Groningen), Erik Pieters (PSV), Kevin Strootman (Sparta Rotterdam), Georginio Wijnaldum (Feyenoord), Ricky van Wolfswinkel (FC Utrecht).
Jong Oranje begint met een grotendeels nieuwe lichting aan het seizoen 2009/2010. Voor de EK-kwalificatie zijn spelers geboren op of na 1 januari 1988 speelgerechtigd. De ploeg is ingedeeld met Finland, Polen, Liechtenstein en Spanje in de jacht op deelname aan het EK onder-21 in 2011. Het eindtoernooi wordt dan gehouden in Denemarken en geldt als kwalificatietoernooi voor de Olympische Spelen van 2012 in Londen.
