Ronald Koeman beleefde met zijn club Southampton een mooi debuutseizoen in de Engelse Premier League. Met broer Erwin als assistent-trainer aan zijn zijde behaalde Koeman Europees voetbal en eindigde Southampton in de sterke Premier League als zevende. Met de oefenwedstrijd tegen FC Groningen komen de Koemannen terug in hun thuisstad bij de club die een belangrijke rol speelde in hun familie.
Naast de wedstrijd in Euroborg speelt de Zuid-Engelse club volgende week een oefenduel tegen Feyenoord. “Ik houd van korte trainingskampen waarin het voor de groep goed is om bij elkaar te zijn. Dit bevordert de adaptatie. Zowel voor mij als voor mijn broer is het natuurlijk bijzonder om in Nederland te zijn. Daarbij is Groningen onze ‘home town’. FC Groningen loopt als een draad door onze beide carrières en ook door die van onze vader Martin. Daarom is het heel leuk om in Euroborg te zijn.”
De Premier League begint voor ‘The Saints’ op zondag 9 augustus tegen Newcastle United. Koeman is blij met de oefenwedstrijden in ons land. “Het zijn goede wedstrijden tegen tegenstanders die willen voetballen. We kunnen hier goed trainen en de faciliteiten zijn prima. Southampton staat hier tegenwoordig meer op de kaart, je zag het afgelopen jaar dat er ook meer Nederlanders naar Southampton kwamen om wedstrijden te bekijken.”
