Komende zondagmiddag speelt FC Groningen in de laatste competitieronde van de Eredivisie tegen AZ. De Alkmaarders zijn nog in de race voor directe plaatsing in de Europa League, maar hebben plaatsing niet meer in eigen hand. De FC wordt dertiende of veertiende.
In Alkmaar is Maikel Kieftenbeld niet van de partij. Hij is geschorst naar aanleiding van de negende gele kaart van dit seizoen, die hij woensdagavond ontving in de thuiswedstrijd tegen NAC Breda. Koen van de Laak sluit mogelijk weer aan bij ‘de achttien’. Kieftenbelds plek in de basiself zal worden ingevuld door Jonas Ivens, Matias Jones of Tim Keurntjes.
Pieter Huistra kan in de 34ste speelronde naast Kieftenbeld niet beschikken over Thomas Enevoldsen, Kees Kwakman, Emil Johansson en Virgil van Dijk. De rest van de selectie was na de vrijdagtraining fit en inzetbaar. Op zaterdag wordt na de training de definitieve selectie bekendgemaakt.
Huistra blikte nog kort terug op woensdagavond: “Het was fijn dat we in de slotfase nog 1-1 scoorden en dat was ook dik verdiend, vond ik. Ook was het goed om te zien dat de ploeg in de tweede helft het publiek er nog een fase achter kreeg. Daar kreeg iedereen ook een goed gevoel bij.”
“Ondanks de mindere resultaten zit er de laatste tijd nog steeds veel energie in de ploeg. Zonder heeft iedereen zin om nog een lekkere wedstrijd te spelen. Voor AZ staat er spanning op, terwijl bij ons vooral de nadruk ligt om goed af te sluiten. De komende twee weken zullen we nog diverse oefenduels spelen en komen de Beloften nog twee keer in actie.”
