Terwijl de eerste selectie alweer is begonnen met de voorbereiding op het nieuwe seizoen, sluit FC Groningen D2 haar seizoen dit weekend af in Spanje. Het team van trainer Peter Hoekstra reist donderdag af naar Santiago de Compostella alwaar de allerkleinste FC’ers deelnemen aan een groot jeugdtoernooi.
Waar eerder de A-, B- en C-jeugd al in het buitenland verbleven om grote toernooien te spelen, is het nu voor het eerst dat ook de D-pupillen het vliegtuig pakken. Het toernooi begint voor de D2 op vrijdagavond en wordt vervolgd op de zaterdag en zondag. Maandagavond worden de jongens weer op Schiphol verwacht.
Dat Hoekstra nog alijd een graag geziene gast is in Galicië (hij speelde zelf voor SD Compostella) blijkt wel uit de uitnodiging die hij vorig jaar tijdens dit toernooi ontving toen hij als toeschouwer aanwezig was. De Spanjaarden zijn erg verheugd met de deelname van FC Groningen en past in de doelstelling om het toernooi een meer internationaal gezicht te geven. Het deelnemersveld kent een aantal aansprekende teams, zoals FC Barcelona, Deportivo La Coruna en Almeria.
Zoals inmiddels te doen gebruikelijk met buitenlandse toernooien, zullen dagelijks de verrichtingen vanuit Spanje op deze webisite te lezen zijn.
