Komend seizoen starten de Beloften van FC Groningen de competitie in de loodzware poule A van de nieuwe competitieopzet. De eerste zeven duels van het seizoen bepalen de indeling van de Eredivisie en Eerste Divisie.
Liefst vier van de zeven ploegen uit de huidige top-7 van de Beloften Eredivisie treffen elkaar in Poule A: Ajax, AZ, Heerenveen/Emmen en FC Groningen. De overige vier teams in deze groep zijn De Graafschap, NEC/FC Oss (beiden Eredivisie), FC Volendam en FC Zwolle.
In Poule B komen vier ploegen uit die momenteel in het rechterrijtje staan van de Beloften Eredivisie: Feyenoord/Excelsior, FC Utrecht, Sparta Rotterdam en ADO Den Haag. De overige ploegen in deze poule zijn FC Dordrecht, NAC Breda, RKC Waalwijk en Willem II.
In poule C zitten drie ploegen uit het linkerrijtje (FC Twente, PSV, Heracles Almelo) en één uit het rechterrijtje (Vitesse/AGOVV). Daarnaast nemen ook FC Den Bosch, VVV/Helmond Sport, Fortuna Sittard en Roda JC deel.
Op maandag 13 augustus wordt de eerste speelronde afgewerkt. Na zeven wedstrijden wordt op 1 oktober de ranglijst opgemaakt en strijden de vier beste teams van elke poule verder om de landstitel. Daarin wordt van maandag 22 oktober tot en met maandag 13 mei 2013 gespeeld. De andere vier ploegen spelen om de plekken 13 tot en met 24.
Komend seizoen wordt de oude dispensatieregel ‘4+1’ weer van kracht. Vier veldspelers en één doelman geboren voor 1 januari 1990 mogen op het wedstrijdformulier staan. Daarnaast mogen maximaal twee spelers worden opgesteld die al 23 competitieduels in het eerste elftal van hun club hebben gespeeld.
