Voor FC Groningen zit er een primeur aan te komen. De Trots van het Noorden speelt komend weekend tegen AZ voor het eerst een competitiewedstrijd op de zondagavond, aftrap 20.00 uur. Vanaf het begin dat dit idee op tafel kwam bij de vaststelling van wedstrijden heeft de FC bezwaar gemaakt tegen dit scenario, maar werd de club geconfronteerd met afspraken die zijn gemaakt ten behoeve van Europees spelende clubs en waaraan ook FC Groningen zich dient te conformeren.
FC Groningen heeft bezwaar tegen Eredivisiewedstrijden op de zondagavond 20.00 uur, omdat de club vindt dat jeugd hiermee wordt uitgesloten van stadionbezoek, evenals mensen uit diverse sectoren die de volgende dag weer vroeg aan een nieuwe werkweek moeten beginnen. Ook voor supporters die afhankelijk zijn van het openbaar vervoer kan een zondagavondwedstrijd een onnodige drempel zijn om het stadion te bezoeken.
Daarnaast is uit een enquête van het supporterscollectief Nederland gebleken dat het overgrote merendeel van de supporters tegen een aftrap is om 20.00 uur op zondagavond. De afspraken zijn echter een voortvloeisel uit de veranderagenda, waarbij Europees spelende ploegen meer ruimte wordt gegeven. Dit geldt voor AZ. De Alkmaarders spelen in de Conference League.
