De loting voor de eerste twee ronden van de Europa League vindt vanmiddag om respectievelijk 13.00 uur en 14.30 uur plaats in Nyon. Directeur Hans Nijland en teammanager Bas Roorda zijn afgereisd naar Zwitserland om de loting bij te wonen. De loting is live te volgen via www.uefa.com
De kans is groot dat vanmiddag de tegenstander nog niet bekend is. In de eerste ronde (loting om 13.00 uur) zijn 78 ploegen die strijden om 39 plekken in de tweede ronde. Voor de tweede ronde zijn er 41 ploegen direct geplaatst. FC Groningen is één van de 32 ploegen met een beschermde status.
De overige negen ploegen hebben geen beschermde status en zijn potentiële tegenstanders van de FC: Gyori ETO FC (Hongarije), Saint Johnstone FC (Schotland), Zawisza Bydgoszcz (Polen), FC Neman Grodno (Wit-Rusland), MFK Košice (Slowakije), FK Jagodina (Servië), FK AS Trencín (Slowakije), ND Gorica (Slovenië), RoPS Rovaniemi (Finland).
De overige 31 potentiële tegenstanders van FC Groningen komen dus in de vorm van ‘de winnaar van’ een duel uit de eerste voorronde. Deze ploegen zullen op donderdag 3 en 10 juli onderling uitmaken welke ploeg zich plaatst voor de tweede voorronde. In dat geval is dus een week voor de eerste Europese wedstrijd van FC Groningen de exacte tegenstander bekend. De duels in de tweede voorronde worden gespeeld op donderdagen 17 en 24 juli. Welke club eerst thuis of uit speelt, wordt vanmiddag door loting bepaald.
