Een dag later dan gepland heeft FC Groningen vanmiddag de eerste training afgewerkt in het Portugese Guimaraes. Vanavond om 22.15 uur Nederlandse tijd staat de wedstrijd tegen Vitoria Guimaraes op het programma.
Om twaalf uur plaatselijke tijd werkten 21 fitte spelers een training af van vijf kwartier op het trainingscomplex van Vitoria Guimaraes. De beide doelmannen Brian van Loo en Luciano da Silva, geblesseerd aan respectievelijk kuit en knie, deden een deel van de training mee.
Na een warming-up en een rondo werden in twee groepen diverse positie-oefeningen gedaan. De training werd afgesloten met een afwerkvorm. In de Portugese competitie wordt gespeeld met de Jabulani-bal die ook op het WK-voetbal in Zuid-Afrika werd gebruikt. De training werd met oranje ballen van dit Adidas-type bal afgewerkt.
Na de lunch gingen de spelers drie uur rusten. Vanavond om 18.30 uur staat het diner gepland. Drie kwartier later is de voorbespreking in het Villa Hotel en om half acht staat de bus klaar voor vertrek naar het stadion van Vitoria Guimaraes. Daar worden vanavond circa 4.000 toeschouwers verwacht. Het duel wordt eveneens live uitgezonden op de Portugese TV.
Zo’n twintig verschillende kranten en radio/TV-stations zullen vertegenwoordigd zijn in het stadion dat zes jaar geleden voor het EK2004 in Portugal geheel werd gerenoveerd. Sindsdien biedt het stadion plaats aan zo’n 30.000 toeschouwers.
Bij FC Groningen zullen vanavond alle fitte spelers in actie komen in het duel met Vitoria Guimaraes, de nummer 6 van de afgelopen Portugese competitie die daarmee Europees voetbal net misliep. Kampioen Benfica is de derde deelnemer aan het toernooi en zaterdagavond de tegenstander van FC Groningen. Op zondag spelen Vitoria Guimaraes en Benfica onderling tegen elkaar.
