Woensdag 30 april is op sportpark ‘Vinkhuizen’ aan de Zilverlaan in de Wijk Vinkhuizen de finale van de FC Groningen Buurt Battle 2014 gehouden. Gorecht-West 2 (met coach Kevin Mennega) en Beijum 1 (met coach Giliano Wijnaldum) werden de winnaars van de editie van 2014. Het was de afsluiting van een acht weken durend project.
De FC Groningen Buurt Battle is één van de vele maatschappelijke projecten van de Stichting FC Groningen in de Maatschappij. De Stichting FC Groningen in de Maatschappij en haar partners Menzis, Nijestee, Rabobank, Plegt-Vos, FC Groningen, Fier4Grunn, Gemeente Groningen, gemeente Assen en de Gemeente Hoogezand-Sappemeer organiseren na het grote succes van vorige jaren het project ook dit jaar weer in tien verschillende wijken. Dit zijn de wijken Oosterpark, Vinkhuizen, Selwerd, Beijum, Lewenborg, De Hoogte/Indische Buurt, Hoogkerk in de Stad en Spoorstraat-Kieldiep en Gorecht-West in Hoogezand en Assen-Oost. Finale De afgelopen acht weken hebben kinderen in de leeftijd van 10 t/m 15 jaar elke week getraind in hun wijk en hebben ze buurtbijdrages uitgevoerd. Hiermee verdienden de deelnemers individueel punten. De deelnemers met de meeste punten nemen met hun wijkteam deel aan de finale waar ze tegen alle andere finaleteams speelden. VIP-arrangement Elke wijk leverde twee teams. Per leeftijdscategorie 10 t/m 12 jaar en 13 t/m 15 jaar is één winnend team uit de bus gekomen, dat een VIP-arrangement wint voor de afsluitende competitiewedstrijd FC Groningen – Heracles Almelo, zaterdagavond 3 mei in Euroborg. De winnaars zijn Beijum 1 in de categorie 10 t/m 12 jaar en Gorecht-West 2 in de categorie 13 t/m 15 jaar. Sociale cohesie Met de FC Groningen Buurt Battle zet FC Groningen zich samen met haar partners in voor een aantal belangrijke zaken. Zo willen de partners met dit project de sociale cohesie en de ouderbetrokkenheid vergroten, de leefstijl verbeteren en overlast terug dringen. Daarnaast zijn normen en waarden en sportparticipatie belangrijke aspecten binnen het project. Eindstanden 2014 10 t/m 12 jaar: 1. Beijum 1, 2. Spoorstraat-Kieldiep 1, 3. Hoogkerk 1, 4.
