Komende woensdag, 13 januari, is het precies tien jaar geleden dat FC Groningen de eerste officiële wedstrijd speelde in Stadion Euroborg, tegen sc Heerenveen. In het kader daarvan is komend weekend de documentaire 'Langs de rand van de afgrond' te zien op FOX Sports en OOG TV.
Midden jaren negentig van de vorige eeuw stond FC Groningen er slecht op. Er waren constant supportersrellen in en rond het Oosterparkstadion, sportief ging het steeds minder en ook financieel zat FC Groningen in zwaar weer. Voor bestuur en directie van FC Groningen was er maar één oplossing om de ontstane en niet oplosbare problemen een einde toe te roepen: verhuizen naar een nieuw stadion. In 1996 werd daartoe de eerste aanzet gegeven middels een onderzoek onder leiding van wijlen sportbestuurder Marten Kastermans. Tien jaar later speelde FC Groningen thuis tegen sc Heerenveen de eerste wedstrijd in het nieuwe onderkomen: Euroborg.
De programmamakers van FC Groningen TV, Emiel Venema en Jos Schoenmaker, kijken in de Doc ‘Langs de rand van de afgrond’ terug op de periode 1996-2006, de periode voor de komst van Euroborg. Een tijd waarin FC Groningen wist te overleven, maar waarin het heel weinig had gescheeld of FC Groningen had niet meer bestaan. De verhuizing naar Euroborg was de redding, maar tot de daadwerkelijke oplevering van het nieuwe stadion moesten diverse enorme hobbels worden overwonnen. De daadwerkelijke komst van Euroborg in het nieuwe Europapark stond diverse keren op de tocht wat zelfs bijna het college van B&W van Groningen deed vallen.
Diverse betrokkenen komen in de Doc aan het woord: algemeen directeur Hans Nijland, oud-financieel directeur Erik Mulder, oud-voorzitter Wim Entzinger, oud-voorzitter van Raad van Commissarissen Ed Zijp, oud-wethouder Willem Smink, architect Wiel Arets, RTV Noord-journalist Pieter de Hart, oud-spelers Paul Matthijs en Sander van Gessel en oud-gemeenteraadsleden Peter Verschuren en Geert Spieker.
De Doc ‘Langs de rand van de afgrond’ wordt vrijdag 8 januari om 15.00 uur uitgezonden op Fox Sports kanaal 5. Zaterdag 9 januari is het om 15.00 uur te zien op kanaal 1 en om 16.00 uur op kanaal 5 en zondag 10 januari om 17.00 uur op kanaal 5.
‘Langs de rand van de afgrond’ is zaterdag 9 januari vanaf 15.30 uur ook te zien op OOG TV, via Ziggo kanaal 40 en KPN, Telfort en XS4All kanaal 622. De uitzending wordt doorlopend herhaald tot zondagochtend om 9.00 uur.
