FC Groningen heeft zich versterkt met Iiro Mendolin. De Finse jeugdinternational komt over van Inter Turku FC en tekent een contract tot medio 2025 bij de Trots van het Noorden. De multifunctionele middenvelder sluit aan bij FC Groningen onder-18.
Iiro Mendolin is geboren op 25 mei 2006 en speelt centraal op het middenveld. De Fin kwam op zijn twaalfde terecht bij KaarinanPojat en maakte op zijn veertiende de overstap naar Inter Turku FC. Bij deze club, waarvan het eerste elftal uitkomt op het hoogste Finse niveau, behoorde de nog maar 16-jarige jeugdinternational tot de op één-na oudste jeugdselectie. Bij FC Groningen zal Mendolin voor het seizoen 2022/2023 aansluiten bij Onder-18, dat onder leiding staat van trainer/coach/manager Melchior Schoenmakers.
Mendolin maakte in maart van dit jaar al kennis met FC Groningen tijdens een succesvolle stageperiode bij de club. “Iiro is bij onze scouts opgevallen tijdens meerdere interlands van Finland onder-16, waarna we een stageperiode hebben voorgesteld om van beide kanten nader kennis te maken,” vertelt hoofd jeugdscouting Arno de Jong. “Die periode is dusdanig goed bevallen dat we hem voor drie seizoenen hebben vastgelegd. Iiro is een middenvelder die op meerdere posities uit de voeten kan.”
Mendolin verhuist logischerwijs naar Nederland en gaat wonen in een gastgezin. Zijn eerste buitenlandse avontuur. “Wij zien veel potentie in Iiro en gaan hem met behulp van onze trainers, specialisten en faciliteiten in Groningen verder helpen om te groeien als voetballer en mens. We zijn blij dat hij zich vanaf vandaag FC’er mag noemen en wensen hem heel veel succes bij onze club.”
