De eerste selectie van FC Groningen is onderweg naar het Griekse Piraeus. De ploeg speelt woensdagavond de zevende en laatste wedstrijd in de voorbereiding op het seizoen 2009/2010. Tegenstander is Olympiacos. Het duel begint om 20.45 uur (Nederlandse tijd).
Vanochtend om 8.15 uur vertrok een 19-koppige selectie van Euroborg naar Schiphol. De geblesseerde Petter Andersson bleef achter in Groningen. Ook de aanstaande vaders Gibril Sankoh en Brian van Loo zijn niet meegereisd. Doelman Leon ter Wielen, verdediger Darryl Lachman en middenvelder Jeffrey Rijsdijk vullen de selectie weer aan tot negentien.
Om 12.35 stijgt vlucht OA152 op. Ruim drie uur later landt het vliegtuig in Athene. Daar is het dan vijf voor vijf ’s middags. Om zes uur staat dinsdagavond de avondmaaltijd gepland in het hotel. Om 21.00 uur werkt FC Groningen een training af.
Woensdagochtend staat na het ontbijt een rondtour door Athene gepland. ’s Avonds om 21.45 uur lokale tijd (20.45 uur) speelt de ploeg van trainer Ron Jans tegen Olympiacos. Vorig jaar speelde FC Groningen in het begin van de voorbereiding in Assen tegen deze ploeg. Destijds trokken de Grieken met 2-0 aan het langste eind.
Op donderdag reist de selectie terug naar Nederland. Vlucht 151 van Olympic Airlines staat gepland voor 9.05 uur. Om 11.45 uur landt de ploeg weer op Schiphol. Rond half vier wordt de ploeg terug verwacht bij Euroborg.
