FC Groningen heeft woensdagavond in Blijham met 1-0 verloren van het Duitse KFC Uerdingen 05. De eindstand was bij rust al bereikt. De enige en winnende treffer kwam van de voet van Connor Krempicki. De wedstrijd op het sportpark van ASVB werd bezocht door 1.368 toeschouwers.
In de eerste helft kwam FC Groningen redelijk uit de startblokken, maar bleek al gauw dat de Duitse ploeg de Groningers met eigen wapens wilde bestrijden. Zo zetten de Duitsers ook vaak hoog druk en werd het tempo redelijk hoog gehouden. Voor de pauze kwam FC Groningen een aantal keren dreigend richting de zestien van ploeg uit de Derde Bundesliga, maar tot schotpogingen kwam de ploeg van trainer Danny Buijs niet. Connor Krempicki was wel trefzeker na een balverovering op zo’n 25 meter van de FC-goal.
In de tweede helft bleven vijf van de elf basisspelers staan en werd met zes spelers een extra verjongingskuur doorgevoerd in het toch al jonge team. Het resulteerde in meer balbezit op de helft van de tegenstander, ook meer schotkansen en mogelijkheden en bovendien pakte FC Groningen meer duels en ‘tweede ballen’. Tim Freriks was tweemaal dichtbij een treffer, voordat hij geblesseerd uitviel en Matthijs Hardijk claimde een strafschop, maar kreeg juist een overtreding tegen. De wedstrijd oogde alles behalve vriendschappelijk en werd uitgevochten op het scherp van de snede. Na 92 minuten vond arbiter Rozendal het welletjes en stond een 0-1 eindstand op de borden.
De zege werd door Uerdingen met gejuich begroet en betekende een goede generale voor de rentree in de Derde Bundesliga op 29 juli. FC Groningen heeft nog wat meer tijd voordat de selectie moet strijden voor de punten, te beginnen op zondag 12 augustus bij Vitesse. Komende zaterdag, 21 juli, is de volgende testcase in Rolde. Daar is Emmen de zesde oefentegenstander. Daarna volgen in ieder geval nog De Graafschap (24/7) en Werder Bremen (29/7) als opwarmers voor de Eredivisie.
