FC Groningen is afgelopen zondagavond opgeschrikt door het nieuws dat clubicoon Martin Koeman onwel is geworden. Op verzoek van de familie heeft de club hierover tot nu toe niets gecommuniceerd. Nu de familie bekend heeft gemaakt dat Koeman zondag is getroffen door een hartstilstand en momenteel in coma ligt in een ziekenhuis in Leeuwarden, laat de directie van de club weten “zeer bezorgd te zijn” over de situatie rond haar clubicoon en wenst het de familieleden veel sterkte dezer dagen.
Martin Koeman bracht zondag een familiebezoek in Friesland. Daar werd hij onwel. Koeman is ter plekke gereanimeerd en overgebracht naar een ziekenhuis in Leeuwarden. Daar verblijft hij sindsdien. Koeman ligt in coma en zijn situatie is kritiek.
Martin Koeman werd eind juli van dit jaar 75 jaar. Voorafgaand aan de eerste competitiewedstrijd van FC Groningen in eigen huis, op zondag 11 augustus tegen FC Utrecht, werd de clubicoon in het zonnetje gezet. Niet alleen vanwege het behalen van een bijzondere leeftijdsgrens, maar tevens omdat Martin Koeman sinds afgelopen zomer reeds vijftig jaar is betrokken bij FC Groningen en daarvoor GVAV. Clubicoon Martin Koeman speelde 281 officiële wedstrijden voor GVAV en nog 54 voor FC Groningen. Hij speelde in 1964 één duel in het Nederlands Elftal en werd nog eens zes keer geselecteerd voor Oranje.
Na zijn actieve carrière bekleedde Koeman de functies van trainer en technisch manager bij FC Groningen. Hij is ‘geestelijk vader’ van de jeugdopleiding van de club en was daar coördinator en begeleider van jonge talenten. Tot en met afgelopen zondag hield Koeman zich nog altijd bezig met scoutingswerkzaamheden voor FC Groningen.
In oktober 2011 werd de familietribune achter het doel aan zuidzijde van Euroborg door de supporters van FC Groningen officieel tot de Koeman Tribune uitgeroepen. Hiermee kreeg niet alleen Martin, maar ook zijn twee voetbalzonen Erwin en Ronald, een permanente naamsvermelding in het stadion van hun club.
