FC Groningen heeft Sepp De Roover verkocht aan Sporting Lokeren. De afgelopen dagen werd er over een overgang van de Belgische rechtsback naar zijn geboorteland gesproken. De transfer werd maandagochtend definitief afgerond. FC Groningen ontvangt voor de 25-jarige verdediger 275.000 euro.
FC Groningen lichtte twee weken geleden nog de optie in het contract van De Roover. De speler had echter aangegeven om privé-redenen naar België terug te willen keren. Met het lichten van de optie stelde FC Groningen de transferrechten veilig. Met de overgang van De Roover naar Lokeren kunnen alle betrokken partijen tevreden zijn.
De Roover kwam halverwege het seizoen 2007/2008 over van Sparta Rotterdam en veroverde direct een basisplaats in Groningen. Afgelopen seizoen startte De Roover in veertien competitiewedstrijden, waarbij zijn laatste optreden op zondag 29 november beperkt bleef tot vijf minuten. In dat duel met NEC kwam De Roover na een actie ongelukkig op zijn linkerbeen terecht en scheurde hij zijn voorste kruisband in de knie af.
