Op 25/26/27 september speelt FC Groningen in de tweede ronde van de KNVB-beker 2012/2013 een uitwedstrijd tegen de winnaar van GVVV (Veenendaal) tegen Groene Ster (Heerlerheide). Beide ploegen spelen woensdag 22 augustus onderling in de eerste ronde.
RKSV Groene Ster heeft een bijzondere prestatie geleverd in de historie van het bekertoernooi. In 1944 speelde het in de finale tegen Willem II. Afgelopen seizoen was VV Staphorst in de eerste bekerronde te sterk (2-4). Groene Ster was vervolgens de nummer 7 in de Hoofdklasse B van de zondagamateurs en plaatste zich op basis van de prestaties in de Districtsbeker Zuid II.
GVVV speelt op Sportpark Panhuis in Veenendaal thuis. Deze club werd in 2011 kampioen van de Hoofdklasse B. Afgelopen seizoen eindigde GVVV als vijfde in de Topklasse zaterdag. In het bekertoernooi werd eerste Nemelaer verslagen (3-1), vervolgens Zwaluwen ’30 (1-2), Excelsior (0-3) en Sparta Rotterdam (1-1, 4-5 na strafschoppen) om vervolgens in de kwartfinales met 2-1 te sneuvelen op bezoek bij AZ.
