Naast Facebook en Twitter is FC Groningen vanaf nu ook actief op Google+. Google+ is het sociale netwerk van zoekmachine Google. Op dit moment is Facebook wereldwijd het grootste sociale medium, maar Google+ laat een sterke groei zien.
Experts voorspellen dan ook een toenemende groei van het medium. Google+ is vergelijkbaar met Facebook, met dit verschil dat je volger wordt (in plaats van ‘likes’) en dat je ‘kringen’ met vrienden kunt aanmaken.
Derde club FC Groningen wil vroegtijdig op deze nieuwe trend inhaken en heeft inmiddels een eigen officiële Google+ pagina gelanceerd. In de Eredivisie hebben op dit moment alleen Ajax (11.659+) en PSV (6.677+) de beschikking over een dergelijke pagina. FC Groningen wordt hiermee dus de derde Nederlandse club actief op dit netwerk. Voor de beeldvorming over de toekomstige mogelijkheden van Google+ is het aardig om te weten dat clubs als Barcelona en Chelsea respectievelijk al 2,3 miljoen en 2,1 miljoen volgers hebben.
Vooralsnog wordt op de Google+ pagina van FC Groningen dezelfde content geplaatst als op de Facebook-pagina van de club. Door nu al actief te zijn op Google+ neemt FC Groningen een voorsprong op de overige clubs en wordt het bereik richting de supporters vergroot. Ook wordt de vindbaarheid op zoekmachine Google verbeterd.
