FC Groningen neemt afscheid van Gibril Sankoh en Theo Lucius. Beide spelers hadden een aflopende verbintenis in Euroborg en deze zal niet worden verlengd.
FC Groningen was voornemens het contract met Gibril Sankoh te verlengen, maar ondanks diverse gesprekken zijn de partijen er niet uitgekomen. Manager technische zaken Henk Veldmate legt uit waarom er niet meer verder wordt gepraat. “Wij wilden Sankoh onder normale voorwaarden voor FC Groningen behouden. Sankoh wilde de beslissing over zijn toekomst echter blijven uitstellen en wachten op andere opties. Maar eens houdt het op, wij moeten verder.”
“Bovendien”, zo gaat Veldmate door, “hebben wij ons de laatste periode bijzonder gestoord aan het gedrag van Sankoh. Spelers moeten graag voor FC Groningen willen uitkomen en anders houdt het op. De mensen bij de club, onze supporters en sponsors hebben recht op duidelijkheid. Wij konden en wilden niet langer wachten op het woord van één speler. Wij moeten naar de toekomst toe kunnen werken en als de ene weg een doodlopende is, worden we gedwongen een andere in te slaan. Wij moeten handelen in het belang van de club.”
Ook Theo Lucius keert niet meer terug in Euroborg. De allrounder zat sinds het begin van dit seizoen zonder club en werd gedurende de winterstop aangetrokken om de selectie van FC Groningen een kwalitatieve en kwantitatieve impuls te geven. De club is tevreden over hetgeen Lucius, ondanks een kuitbeenbreuk, in de paar maanden dat hij in Groningen was, heeft bijgedragen aan de opmars na de winterstop. “Maar wij hebben niet de volledige overtuiging dat Lucius volgend seizoen die toegevoegde waarde voor de selectie zal hebben, die wij van hem verwachten”, aldus Veldmate.
