FC Groningen is door de KNVB ingedeeld in categorie 2. De voetbalbond heeft per jaar drie meetmomenten om de gezondheid van de clubs in het betaalde voetbal te peilen. De KNVB hanteert bij de indeling drie categorieën. Tot categorie 2, waarin de meeste clubs – en nu dus ook weer FC Groningen – zitten, behoren de clubs die financieel gezond zijn.
In de twee vorige meetmomenten werd FC Groningen nog ingedeeld in de categorie 3, bestaande uit de financieel meest gezonde clubs. Daarvoor was FC Groningen nagenoeg standaard ingedeeld in categorie 2, zoals dat nu dus ook weer het geval is. FC Groningen balanceerde tijdens de meetmomenten in de afgelopen twee seizoenen continu op de grens van categorie 2 en 3. Enkele financiële cijfers kunnen er in de score van de punten al voor zorgen dat de balans net naar de ene of juist naar de andere categorie doorslaat. In beide gevallen mag gesteld worden dat FC Groningen er nog altijd financieel gezond opstaat. Licentiesysteem De categorisering van clubs is al jaren onderdeel van het licentiesysteem van de KNVB. De financiële situatie van de clubs wordt door middel van een puntensysteem beoordeeld. Clubs worden per rapportagemoment op basis van het gescoorde puntenaantal ingedeeld in drie categorieën. Doelstelling van het systeem is het waarborgen van de continuïteit van de clubs en in het verlengde daarvan de continuïteit van de competities betaald voetbal.
