FC Groningen heeft Sergio Padt gecontracteerd. De 24-jarige keeper wordt overgenomen van het Belgische AA Gent. De doelman tekende een contract voor drie seizoenen in Euroborg. Padt is de opvolger van Marco Bizot, die is verkocht aan Racing Genk in België. De nieuwe doelman van FC Groningen staat vandaag, dinsdag 24 juni, direct op het trainingsveld in Haren, waar de Trots van het Noorden sinds afgelopen zondag is begonnen aan de voorbereiding op het nieuwe seizoen.
Padt heeft zijn voetbalopleiding gehad bij Ajax. De Amsterdammer doorliep vanaf Onder-17 ook alle nationale jeugdelftallen, tot en met Jong Oranje. Voordat hij in 2011 de overstap maakte naar AA Gent werd Padt door Ajax één seizoen verhuurd aan Go Ahead Eagles. In Gent was Padt tot en met halverwege het vorige seizoen eerste man onder de lat. Na de winterstop verloor hij zijn plek in het doel van de Belgische club. Hoewel hij nog een doorlopende verbintenis had van één jaar in België en hij zijn contract bovendien kon verlengen bij AA Gent, koos Padt ervoor om weer ergens anders eerste keeper te worden. Huiswerk FC Groningen bood hem die kans nadat de club Marco Bizot zag vertrekken naar Racing Genk. Padt speelde bijna honderd wedstrijden in het betaalde voetbal. Manager technische zaken Henk Veldmate is zeer te spreken over het aantrekken van Padt. “Doordat er al eerder belangstelling was voor Marco Bizot en hij bij ons een uitstekend seizoen achter de rug had, hielden we er al vrij snel nadrukkelijk rekening mee dat Bizot ons zou gaan verlaten. Het is dan belangrijk dat je je huiswerk goed hebt gedaan en met Padt hadden we direct een nieuwe eerste kandidaat bovenaan op ons lijstje staan. Hij is van dezelfde generatie als Bizot en hun carrières lopen een beetje parallel aan elkaar. Padt heeft een goede lengte en uitstraling voor een keeper. Met hem heb je een persoonlijkheid in het doel staan. Wij denken dat Padt zich bij ons nog weer verder kan ontwikkelen door wekelijks in de Eredivisie te spelen.”
